Unlike her time growing up in El Salvador, Laura Maradiaga just isn’t paralyzed using the constant concern with murder in Houston. The 11-year-old can walk to Fondren Middle School to review multiplication tables and English or flake out along with her mother, older sis and Lalo, the household dog, during the playground near their apartment.
This past year, her mother, Dora Alvarado, said she recognized that when Laura along with her 15-year-old cousin, Adamaris Alvarado, didn’t flee El Salvador, they’d perish.
