The college was founded in the year 1845. The university has four colleges dedicated to specialised fields of study. College of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences, College of Arts, Social Sciences and Celtic Studies, College of Science and Engineering, and College of Business, Public Policy and Law. It has the distinction of being one of the cheapest universities in Ireland for international students.
The university has around 17000 students, and it has a decent 12% population of international students. It has been placed at 258th rank globally in the QS World University Rankings. The graduates from NUI have an excellent track record, and they end up working with top public and private bodies.
